Throughout all of the chaos of the last few months, it’s often difficult to remember the real people behind every LinkedIn story, every resume, and every subscriber (hello!).
Often, as public health professionals, and especially epidemiologists, we can forget the faces behind the issue, drawing conclusions outside of the lived experience using data and statistics. We see the serious implications, but they seem like far-away realities.
In the face of my own personal emergency, I had the same realization. You can’t fully comprehend it or how you’ll react until it happens to you. Until then, it’s an intangible experience that you acknowledge and validate, but never fully understand. Will you crash out while cooking dinner? Will you go right into fix-it mode? Will you just need a hug?
This week, I am learning that there is no right or wrong reaction in the face of this sudden plunge into ‘survival mode’.
While I often like to talk about tips, tricks, and musings around the job hunt before the listings, I am taking a different direction with this installment.
Unclench your jaw. Take a deep breath. Go on a walk. Watch an episode of your favorite TV show. Do the Wordle. Whatever you choose, be as intentional with being kind and patient with yourself as you are with applying for jobs. Your body and mind will thank you for it, giving you the strength to keep fighting.
With that, our usual reminders. Job postings up to this point can be found here. Questions, feedback, and jobs you want to see here can be submitted to this form. And, of course, subscribe and share—we’re in this together.
Now, for a shorter list than usual, as I am trying to practice what I preach in these stressful times. I hope you take a moment between applications for self-love and care.
