Well, we made it through another week, but certainly not without bumps and bruises along the way. Yes, it was another hard week for public health professionals everywhere, especially with yet another barrage of RIFs. Nevertheless, we cannot get discouraged. We cannot quit fighting the fighting the good fight—and that means continuing to pursue spaces for public health to continue on.
Recently, I was asked for advice about unemployment and career breaks. What are strategies to survive an even more competitive job market? There’s certainly some obvious answers—network, send cold emails, cast a wide net, etc. After all, a personal mantra of mine is “The worst someone can say is ‘no’”. But you still have to exercise your public health muscles. As passionate as we are, we are not exempt from fading memory and atrophy.
Find new ways to share your passion in the interim. Partner with a local school or college for the creation and facilitation of a tabletop exercise for its students. Use open-access data to learn a new coding language or practice analytics. Pursue even more technical aspects and launch a GitHub page. Volunteer in your community. Work on scientific communication on your own social media, in Op-Eds, or even a SubStack like this. Find some freelance work. We need to be creative to not only continue to practice the art and science of public health but also find new ways to set ourselves apart in the rat race of job applications.
To ease the uncertainty of these times, we have a whole new list of opportunities. As always, listings previously shared can be found here and questions/feedback/jobs to include/success stories can be submitted here. And, of course, feel free to share and subscribe across your network.
On your marks…get set…GO!

Thank you for compiling these job opportunities. I just wanted to point out that some of the job opportunities are listed as being based in certain cities but are actually remote. For example, the Komodo Health job opportunities are listed as being based in San Francisco, but they are fully remote.
