A friend of mine recently turned down a job offer, after going through a company’s full recruitment process. She felt guilty. Yes, she needed to get a job in this very competitive market but, at the end of the day, she wasn’t willing to uproot her life for this position.
In our current circumstances, all feelings are valid. Resentment, anger, sadness, disappointment, guilt, self-pity. Ultimately, though, these feelings don’t serve us. They create stress that slows us down. While it is okay to feel any way that is true to us, we have to do right by ourselves. That can mean sitting and applying to job after job or it can mean stepping away for a few days. It can mean taking a job that is challenging and meaningful, but maybe not quite what we want, or, like my friend, turning one down.
There’s a lot of factors to balance in the job hunt. And, at present, the “shoot now, ask questions later” mentality might feel the most productive. But, at the end of the day, only you can decide what is right for you. Your job is not your life, but it does influence many parts of it. It’s okay to make reasonable selfish or self-indulgent choices—otherwise you may put incidentally yourself in a position that only continues to bring out to these negative feelings.
