You’re out with your friends after a long week of applying for job after job. You quickly glance at your phone and see the first line of an email “Thank you for applying, but, unfortunately,…”. You know what comes after, and your night suddenly feels less fun.
Rejection always hurts. Especially when its for a job that you PERFECTLY matched the description for. You can’t help but wonder, “If they only gave me the chance interview, maybe I could have sealed the deal”. You may feel angry, disappointed, or even desensitized to yet another template email. That’s okay.
I’d like to offer a change in perspective, maybe to take the emotional burden off you and help you to keep moving forward. For every “no” you get, that’s someone else’s “yes”. And, in a time where public health jobs are as scarce as ever, getting another person in is a win. Of course, you want it to be you and be done with the stress and uncertainties of the job hunt, but, as public health professionals, we so often take a population perspective—why not apply it here to soften the blows?
This isn’t an invalidation of the multitude of difficult emotions involved in the job hunt—there is no wrong way to feel. Think of this as a way to protect your peace—if it can’t be you, it could give you comfort to think about how it could be going to a federal employee who was RIF’ed or another new grad. And, someday, the tables will turn—your “yes” becomes someone else’s “no”. Your time is coming.
As always, all previously shared jobs can be found in this spreadsheet. Questions, comments, and leads can be shared here. And, of course, subscribe and share—let’s help every young public health professional find their “yes”.
