Don’t put your eggs in one basket.
As much as the phrasing of this age-old idiom doesn’t quite stand the test of time, its meaning is more important now than ever—especially in our field. In a saturated market like ours, we cannot put all our efforts into only a few job application processes—we have to cast a wide net, play the field.
We must think broadly, think about the next opportunity as a stepping stone to reaching future goals. We must be flexible. What do you want to learn? What do you want to take with you into future opportunities? Putting your eggs in different baskets, or, rather, your resume into different application pools, not only improves your chances for success, but your chances to learn something new to carry into the future to later meet your goal.
So don’t be afraid to apply to jobs that aren’t exactly what you want long-term. Look in different industries, different areas, different specializations. Try new things.
As always, all previously-shared opportunities can be found here. Questions, feedback, success stories, and job leads can be shared here. And, of course, don’t forget to subscribe and share!
