Could one of these 37 internships be made to fit?
I find that we like to think about jobs, including internships, like Cinderella’s glass slipper. We read the job description, hoping to find the perfect fit, whether it be for our own interests or for an academic requirement. It’s a “Yes, it’s a perfect fit!” or “No, it’s not for me!”
In my experience, at least, this isn’t quite true. If we want to stick with the Cinderella’s slipper metaphor, the job hunt isn’t a Disney fairytale. It would be better represented by the stepsister who cut off her toe to get the shoe to fit in the Brother’s Grimm version (or in Into the Woods if you want to get funky with it). Think more along the lines of, “This internship is incorporates topics I like, but maybe I can ask my supervisor if I can do an additional analysis to meet my degree’s practicum requirement”. Less defined—something more amorphous.
Point being, we might not find the “perfect” fit, but we can make it work. We can find the intersections between positions and our own interests or the core capabilities for a practicum. If you’re interested in the position otherwise and they might be interested in you, why pass that up? Talk to the hiring manager about maybe adding an additional deliverable to enhance your learning experience. Who knows—maybe it could benefit them too!
As I like to say, “The worst anyone can say is no”. Don’t close doors before they ever fully open. Be willing to be flexible. Advocate for yourself and what you want out of an internship experience. After all, what if they say yes?
