“Practice makes perfect!”
As cliche and over-repeated as this age-old phrase is, it always holds up. You can’t get better at ANYTHING unless you take the time to fine-tune your skills, methods, and processes.
This why internships are such a great opportunity for students. It’s your chance to practice what you learned in the classroom and refine it for application in the real world. Practice datasets, scenarios, and case studies can only take you so far, especially when the real organization and businesses face more nuance and complexity. You don’t know how to adjust what you’ve learned until you actually encounter it.
Internships are extra work outside the classroom—it’s true—but the cost is far outweighed by the benefits of such a learning opportunity. Not to mention, I only share paid opportunities here—so extra incentive to branch out and apply for opportunities to practice your public health skills.
