Rory McIlroy finally got his career grand slam this weekend at the 2025 Masters, one of the most prestigious and competitive tournaments in golf. After a decade of attempts, McIlroy finally did it in a sudden-death playoff.
McIlroy’s story transcends golf, in ways that are particularly relevant to the competitive nature of the pubic health field at present. It isn’t going to be easy—there are so many other talented people after the same victory you are, and it’s easy to get in your head with doubts about yourself and your abilities. But, if McIlroy’s success this weekend tells us anything, it is that you shouldn’t ever count yourself out or give up. Every defeat and every victory is a chance to learn about ourselves and improve. Keep showing up, keep putting your best foot forward, and, soon enough, you’ll have your moment.
