Recently, I feel like I’ve heard the phrase “Good things come to those who wait” over and over AND OVER again. It reminds me of so many other little sayings I heard growing up about having patience…which I still don’t have. My personal favorite? My AP US History teacher always said that the semester and preparation was “a marathon, not a sprint”.
Like I’ve said, I’ve never been a particularly patient person. I don’t do sitting and waiting well AT ALL. And, while I think there is a lot of truth to these old adages, maybe slow and steady doesn’t ALWAYS win the race. Maybe our need for speed is important. Sometimes, we can’t wait for things to come to us—we must be proactive and seek out opportunity with ferocity and haste. We have to fight for it.
Again, I think patience is important for any task, such as a job hunt, but so is a sense of urgency. Walk with a purpose. Think outside the box. Reach out to that recruiter or that hiring manager. Work your network.
