Internship season is stressful. Not only do have to find a position, you have to find the best position. Very rarely, however, do we remember to qualify this idea as “the best position for you”. Whether it be thorough academic advising, peer pressure, or other influences, we are often taught to focus on name or prestige, but rarely on fit. .

While attributes like prestige can get you somewhere, nothing beats targeted skills development during a strong learning experience, which you can find beyond the big names. The internship search is hard enough—why limit your search to popularity? Give a breadth of employers a chance! Who knows what you’ll find! Being a big fish in a small pond can be just as impressive as being a little fish in a big pond. It’s all about perspective and what you do with the experience.
